The Bristol Bike Project

For Schools

Work for a school or youth group? Need a fun and focussed activity
for your young people? Hire us to run one-to-one or group sessions
in bicycle mechanics for anyone aged 8-18.

Here’s how it works…

We offer a six-week bicycle mechanics course for groups of 4 to 8 young people, during which time they will:

  • gain a comprehensive understanding of how a bike works;
  • learn how to recognise a range of problems with a bike and be confident in resolving them;
  • carry out a selection of useful adjustments, repairs and servicing tasks;
  • use a selection of general and specialist tools.

At the end of the programme, participants receive a BBP certificate of general bicycle skills & maintenance and have the opportunity to further build their skills through volunteering at our weekly After School Bikes workshops. We also offer bespoke 1-1 sessions with young people as well as a 4 week Build-a-Bike Programme, during which participants earn a bicycle to take away whilst developing a comprehensive set of skills in bicycle mechanics.

These workshops engage young people from all backgrounds, with many coming from disadvantaged communities. As well as teaching new skills, we also offer young people the opportunity to spend time in a supportive, stimulating and non-judgemental environment and to have contact with positive adult role models.

We take referrals from schools and youth groups in and around Bristol. We currently deliver this programme at Hengrove Family Cycling Centre and work successfully with many schools in South Bristol.
